An elderly woman in Sweden has been sentenced to six weeks in prison. Her crime: She baked bread, buns and Swedish sandwich cakes, and sold them on Facebook.
According to Swedish state owned media P4 Norrbotten, the woman conducted her business during several years on Facebook where she uploaded images of her pastries and sold them to online users.
The problem is that woman didn’t follow mandatory rules, that requires registration of kitchen equipment among other things. The woman continued her business even though the authorities told her to stop.
At first, the authorities gave the woman a fine, but this has now being converted to imprisonment, decided by the Court of Appeal in Upper Norrland.
“She does not share the assessment that what she did justifies a prison sentence, and she also cannot understand how she would manage to serve a prison sentence”, says the woman’s lawyer, Frida Larsson to P4 Norrbotten.
Sweden has long been known for its, to say the least, peculiar approach to handling different crimes and criminals. Among other things, the country’s top ranks of the national police, has on several occasions, tried to combat serious organized gang crime — often committed by immigrant groups — by inviting them to pizza gatherings, instead of putting them in jail.
