Russia Germany direct war Merz long-distance missiles Berlin

By the new German chancellor Friedrich Merz having announced that Germany will both approve and help Ukraine to manufacture long-distance missiles to attack targets deep inside Russia that can reach Moscow, Russia has now stepped up the tone against Berlin significantly.

All of this sounds like a surreal and bizarre scenario that many never thought would happen again – that Germany and Russia would end up in a new major war against each other for the third time, in the form of World war three. But much seems to indicate that such a scenario is no longer entirely unthinkable.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that Germany is repeating past mistakes by getting directly involved in the Ukraine conflict, a path he says could lead to its collapse.

In an interview on Wednesday, Lavrov reacted to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s announcement of a new military-industrial partnership with Ukraine to jointly produce long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russia. “Germany’s direct involvement in the war is now obvious,” Lavrov stated, adding that Berlin is “sliding down the same slippery slope” as in previous decades, Russian state owned media outlet RT reports.

Lavrov urged “responsible politicians” in Germany to halt what he called “madness.”

Merz, speaking alongside Ukrainian President Zelensky in Berlin, confirmed plans for joint arms production but offered no details. He also stated that range restrictions on Western-supplied weapons to Ukraine had been lifted months ago.

The editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya, which oversees RT, Margarita Simonyan, commented on Germany’s position on X, writing: “If Merz uses German weapons to strike Moscow – and we all know that Kiev has no independent capacity to operate Tauruses or other long-range missiles – then Russia will have no choice but to strike Berlin directly. Simple enough.”

The “former” BlackRock top figure, Merz, annoucned earlier this week, that “there are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine”, from the German side, EuroNews reports.
