In an interview with French media, Hungary’s president Viktor Orbán said that Russia “is too weak” to be able to attack Europe in a potential future conflict.
It was during an interview with French outlet LCI last Sunday that Orbán expressed his opinion about his alleged “ally” Russia and its military strength and capabilities.
Orbán elaborated on his reasoning by saying, “Because they [Russia] can’t even defeat Ukraine,” and added, “so they can’t really defeat NATO either.”
Further in the interview, the Hungarian president said that Moscow only responds to displays of power on the international stage and that Europe needs to increase its strength. “I believe the Russians only understand the language of force. Europe must strengthen itself in the long term; a strategic agreement with Russia is needed.”
Viktor Orbán, who is in a minor conflict with the EU and has been accused of serving Kremlin interests due to his maintained neutral stance toward Putin and Russia, was also invited to the May 9th celebrations at Red Square in Moscow — an invitation he ultimately declined. His recent statements come as something of a surprise, and many are now questioning what his relationship with Russia truly looks like today.
