During a speech in the European Parliament on May 6, 2025, the German politician Martin Sonneborn directed some, to say the least, harsh review remarks directly at EU leader Kaja Kallas about her autobiographical book, which made her react with both a sour face and a surprised look.
Sonneborn stated the following:
“I just read your autobiography. 432 meaningless pages,” said Sonneborn and continued on commenting that the price had dropped remarkably; “In Estonia, the price has been reduced by 80% to €3.99, and the hardcover isn’t even sold on Amazon.”
Sonneborn is a German satirist, journalist, and politician, as well as the founder of the satirical political party Die PARTEI (The Party for Labour, Rule of Law, Animal Protection, Promotion of Elites, and Grassroots Democratic Initiative).
Since 2014, he has been a member of the European Parliament. He is known for using his position in the Parliament to deliver satirical comments and criticism directed at political opponents and institutions. An example of this is his statement about the Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas and her book, where he used humor to express his critique.
In the speech directed at Kallas, he continued to slam the notorious and war-mongering EU leader, saying her book and its content reveal immense ignorance and incompetence.
“You know as little about Cuba, Europe, and the world as you do about diplomacy, foreign policy, or brain surgery,” said Sonneborn, and went on to compare Kallas’s abilities to those of his own hamster.
“I expect to gain more insight from talking to my hamster about black holes in dwarf galaxies.”
Sonneborn quoted several sentences from Kallas’s text to highlight her ignorance, by saying; “Let me quote some of the best lines from your work,” said the politician, and went on trying to make Kallas look stupid apparently, with these quotes taken from her book:
“‘Help, what an ugly photo I have’; ‘The polonaise is a beautiful dance’; ‘I ran in my dress as fast as I could’; ‘I looked this young air force pilot in the eye and went to the bathroom.’”
“And finally,” said Sonneborn when he made the last quote from Kallas’s book: “‘The Estonian ambassador really wanted a drink, even though it was still early in the morning.’”
While Sonneborn delivered his speech right in front of the controversial Estonian politician Kallas, she seemed less amused by the satirical criticism, and displayed a variety of facial expressions during the speech, where one could see both an amused and affected facial expression on the EU leader, while at the same time she occasionally responded with somewhat surprised and sour faces.
