Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was critically injured after being shot multiple times during a campaign event in Bogota on Saturday night.

The attack took place in the Modelia district of the capital, where Uribe was addressing supporters ahead of his 2026 presidential bid.

Witnesses say the attacker approached on a motorcycle and opened fire, striking Uribe in the head and chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition following emergency surgery.

Authorities have confirmed the arrest of a suspect — a 15-year-old boy — who was apprehended at the scene. The teenager was found in possession of a 9mm Glock pistol and had sustained a leg injury, likely during the arrest.

Investigators are working to determine whether he acted alone or was part of a broader plot. A reward of 3 billion pesos (approximately $730,000 USD) has been offered for information leading to further arrests.

Uribe Turbay, a prominent figure from the right-wing Centro Democrático party, is the grandson of former President Julio César Turbay. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in a 1991 rescue attempt during a kidnapping by drug traffickers, marking a tragic legacy that still resonates in Colombian political memory.

This is the first assassination attempt on a Colombian presidential candidate in decades, evoking memories of the violent political era of the late 20th century.
