Leaders from some of the BRICS countries.

Within mainstream media in the West and on various social media platforms, certain rumors are beginning to spread suggesting that the strong cohesion of the BRICS countries is in fact a house of cards that can burst more or less.

There are actually two rumors that have gained momentum recently.

One is from the New York Times, which claims to have received “evidence” sent by a hacker group called Ares Leaks.

This group says it obtained classified data from none other than the Russian security service FSB, allegedly showing that behind the scenes, Russia views its ally and “close friend” China as a dangerous “enemy” and views the country with “suspicion” about its true intentions.

The FSB unit is alleged in the document to warn that China is spying on Russia’s military operations in Ukraine to learn about Western weapons and tactics.

It also claims that Chinese academics are plotting to make territorial claims on Russian land, and that China is conducting espionage in the Arctic under the guise of mining and scientific research.

The New York Times, of course, has not published the actual material, citing that it is classified data, but implicitly expects readers to accept it as “truth” without questioning its credibility.

Furthermore, the paper claims to have handed the material over to six intelligence agencies, which allegedly “verified” the documents and all assessed them as “authentic”.

That said, this is apparently meant to be taken as proof that the claims are true, following Kafkaesque principles, with the public expected to accept this story wholesale as “fact.”

This is similar to the sexual assault allegations against Julian Assange and other celebrities who have become inconvenient to the power elite in the West. Many claims have been made, but no evidence ever presented.

This could very well be true, as rivalry always exists between nations — even allies — and alliances can quickly fall apart.

But the problem here is that there is no evidence to support these claims.

It’s also important to recognize that the West benefits from breaking up the cooperation between Russia and China, just as it managed to do during the Cold War between the former Soviet Union and China.

Another rumor that has started circulating again in the past day on social media and in some “lesser-known” news sites, is that India risks being kicked out of BRICS.

The reason is reportedly tied to the failure of “Operation Sindoor” and India’s alleged “unjustified aggression” towards Pakistan, which has increased its diplomatic isolation.

Furthermore, it is claimed that Indonesia will replace India, ensuring that the letter “I” in BRICS retains its relevance.

“India is being perceived as a disruptive force within the bloc, hindering economic cooperation and shared developmental goals,” a source revealed, according to several news websites which have reported on the same issue.

But who is the source? Is it a credible source, or is it fake news and false rumor spreading?

The growing India-China border tensions, ideological differences, and India’s perceived pursuit of regional hegemony are other factors highlighted by these anonymous sources, as reported by several smaller and “unknown” news sites.

Yet again, no credible evidence is presented to support these claims.

Again, it is by no means inconceivable that India could leave the alliance, especially given their closer ties with Western powers since Trump became president. So this scenario is entirely possible.

But the problem is that these are just rumors without concrete evidence — much like the case with Russia and China mentioned above.

So what is the point here? It’s that we should be cautious about all these loose claims and try to see whether there are forces aiming to weaken BRICS by stirring conflict among its members, or even pushing them to leave the group, causing the entire organization and cooperation to collapse.

There are certainly actors who stand to gain from this. And it’s not hard to figure out who these forces are and the clever strategic methods they use to divide and conquer their enemies and competitors.
