On May 9, 2025, Russia marked the 80th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany with a grand military parade as always in Moscow’s Red Square.

Over 11,500 troops participated, including soldiers who fought in Ukraine, alongside displays of advanced weaponry like nuclear-capable missiles.

President Vladimir Putin used his speech to draw parallels between World War II and Russia’s current war in Ukraine, claiming Russia is once again fighting against “Nazism.” He warned the West that Russia’s strategic forces are always ready but insisted Moscow does not want a global conflict.

Notable international guests included Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Alexandr Lukashenko, and American actor Steven Seagal, a longtime Putin supporter and Russian citizen. Their presence highlighted continued support from several countries despite Western isolation.

The parade took place under heavy security, with mobile signals blocked in Moscow due to fears of Ukrainian drone attacks that Zelensky has threatened with recently. Despite a declared Russian ceasefire, Ukraine reported continued airstrikes, calling the celebrations cynical and provocative.

The event served as both a historical tribute and a political message amid ongoing war and rising global tensions.
