A 16-year-old youth in Sweden has been arrested on suspicion of the fatal shooting of 3 people that took place in the Swedish city of Uppsala on Tuesday at around 5 PM.
The dead victims are between 15 and 20 years old, according to the police, Swedish state owned media, SVT reported. One of the deceased is said to have connections to a larger criminal network that the police are currently investigating
The youth, who according to sources has an immigrant background from a North African country, has been involved in criminal activity for several years in Sweden. He is said to have “deviated from” from a so-called HVB home, and shortly thereafter went to the hair salon where he is believed to have committed the murders.
There is still no clear picture of the motive from the police, and the Swedish establishment media are relatively tight-lipped about the details of the incident.
However, speculation is already suggesting that it may be a gang-related conflict within the criminal underworld, with links to serious organized crime—something Sweden has had massive problems with over the past decades and which has only increased in recent years with mass immigration, not least with illegal migrants from third world countries, but also with second-generation immigrants that are born in Sweden, often in bad areas of the country like Rosengård and Rinkeby.
A question that many in Swedish society are asking, including leading politicians, is whether HVB homes have become a recruitment base for mafia groups targeting young criminals.
Since Swedish politicians privatized large parts of publicly owned institutions, such as HVB homes in the 80s, and not least during the Fredrik Reinfeldt era, much of this activity has ended up in the hands of criminal clans and mafia networks. These groups are making enormous profits by receiving children and youth from the state who are struggling in society, and officially providing them with HVB treatment, but in reality, many suspect, using the homes largely as a recruitment base of new gang members.
Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer, from the conservative party, Moderaterna, views the incident with grave concern.
– If that is the case, it fits into a pattern we are all too familiar with, that children are being recruited and taken from HVB homes or other institutions within the state youth care system, he told SVT.
